As of last Friday we are the proud owners of five imported Texas chicks (pictured above). Abilene, Odessa, Lorena, Hilda, and Aransas - you Texas people will get that. I drove out to Effingham County - rural area 40 minutes outside of Savannah - with a friend to pick them up (she brought her camera along and took some pics). Pics of my friend's farm animals and the chickens below. Was only supposed to get three, but I was convinced at the feed store that you will likely lose a couple so we should get more (we're one week in and they are all going strong). I have to admit I am taken with these fluffy helpless things. They each seem to have a personality and one in particular is fearless. It's been one week since these pictures were taken and they have grown a lot and have gotten more feathers.
Some interesting things about our chickens:
1. All five peep over the wood side of the brooder when we come home and open the garage door.

2. A renegade fly met his demise when he flew in there with them. They practically smothered eachother trying to get to it.
3. Our crazy dog is afraid of them, our fat dog thinks they're caged treats and drools on the cage while we hit her with a stick and yell 'no food'.
4. Chickens do things that make them look retarded - like fall over - which worried me at first until Dave shared the wisdom 'they're feet are half the size of their body, what do you expect them to do?'
5. Food time is fun time.
6. Chickens don't need much - seems that no one sells chicken toys or balls or swings or anything - concerned about them being bored.
