The 5th Anniversary Wood

Okay, so according to antiquated anniversary present lore, the 5th anniversary is supposed to be 'wood'. As interested as I am in Dave hand-whittling me a new headboard, we have opted for a different 'wood' gift.
In May for our anniversary week and my birthday, we are heading into the 'woods', to hike our first portion of the Appalachian Trail from Amicola Falls (here in Georgia) into North Carolina. The portion that we plan to do is 117 miles, and will take us 7-8 days - purely an estimate.

We have spent the last month or so planning, making lists, watching documentaries, and undergoing our own hiking crash course. It is amazing the amount of information that is out there, and the gear that we will need.

The first boxes have been arriving, so it's been Christmas nightly for the last week. We are going to break in our gear and more importantly, our hiking boots, at Cumberland Island over Easter weekend. I have heard great things about the maritime forest, ruins, and wildlife on Cumberland Island, and since it is only 2 hours away, it seems like the right spot.
